Deuteronomy 32:17
17:They sacrificed to demons, not to God, To gods they did not know, To new gods, new arrivals That your fathers did not fear.
Comment:
These verses are part of a long song that Moses sang to his people, a warning that when he was gone, the people of Israel would fall away and forget the Lord. Moses knew that the people were weak and easily drawn away from the Lord, forgetting all that he had done for them.
He was warning them that they would begin to be drawn away to other gods, rather then the one true God that their fathers feared.
It is so easy to read the book of Deuteronomy and wonder how in the world can the people be so foolish. Reading the book we see all the things that God has done for the people, how can they possibly forget the good He has done for them?
But then I look at myself. How in the world can I so quickly forget the things the Lord has done for me? So often fear grips me, wondering how I will make it through the next day, only minutes after I have watched God do something wonderful for me!
I am one of those people Moses sang about, a member of the “perverse generation”.
Lord, thank you for all you have done for me! Please help me to remember your mercy, grace and loving kindness to me. Day by day grow my faith and steady me fearful heart that I may not turn away to other gods! Amen.
