Judges 6:10
Also I said to you, “I am the LORD your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not obeyed My voice.’”
Comment:
Well, we have moved all the way through the book of Joshua and now enter the era of the Judges. The author of this book is Unknown and the date of the writing is considered to be the 11th Century B.C. My bible says the theme of this book is “Defeat and Deliverance”.
In our verse for today, we jump all the way to the 6th chapter of the book. The first three chapters tell of the death of Joshua and the institution of the office of Judge.
During the time of the book of Judges, the Israelites followed a regular pattern. They sinned by breaking God’s law and worshipping the gods of the Canaanites, then God would punish them by sending an enemy to fight them and they would be forced to serve a foreign king. When the Israelites would finally repent, God would send deliverance in the form of a judge who would stop the enemy. For a time they would have peace and rest until the people became complacent and fell away again and followed the gods around them.
I don’t know about you but just writing this story hit home with me. I know most of us don’t fight real wars or worship the type of gods that the lured the Israelites away, however, I do fight the things of this world that draw me away every day. And there are so many “gods” that get my attention! I see myself following this same pattern, losing my way, calling on the Lord, walking closely for awhile and then being drawn away, and calling on His name again. Like the verse, I hear the messages that the Lord has fought my enemies for me but so often, I too have failed to obey His voice.!
Lord, please stop this merry-go-round I am on. I am ready for my Deliverance! Make me stay on a straight path, walking by your side, forever. Amen.
