Fear Daily Devotional - March 7

1 Samuel 12:14
If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the LORD your God.

Comment:

With the verse yesterday, we saw how Saul rallied the people and they rose up and defeated the Ammonites.  Here Samuel brings all the people together and once again reminds them of all that the Lord God had done for them over the years.  He reminds them that Saul was anointed their earthly king as a gift from God at the request of the people themselves.   He also reminds them of their responsibility in the relationship.

Doesn’t it seem like we have heard this same request for reverential “fear” of the Lord many times in the short distance we have traveled in the Bible?  Again, it seems to be a simple request from our God, to “fear”, serve, obey and not rebel, and all will be well for them (and us).  It seems pretty obvious that we must be hard headed if we need to hear this message so many times!

Here we are told that the first step by us is to do the fear, serve, obey and not rebel part, so that we and our leaders will continue to follow the Lord.  It appears by this verse that as a group, our collective reliance on the Lord, will affect the king (or our leaders) to also continue to follow the Lord’s leading.   Ponder on that one for awhile.

Lord, help me to follow your simple directions for life, and not have spiritual amnesia, as so often seems to occur.  Help my walk to affect the walk of the leaders around me as well.  Amen.
