1 Samuel 12:18
So Samuel called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.
Comment:
Today’s passage falls in the midst of a conversation that Samuel was having with the Israelites. He was reminding them over and over how they requested an earthly king even though “the Lord Your God was Your king.” 1Sam. 12:12.
From yesterday’s verse he continues to tell “the rest of the story”. Samuel, reminds them what will happen if the do not obey the voice of the Lord, how “the hand of the Lord will be against you, as it was against your fathers”. 1 Sam 12:15
Just in case the people didn’t believe Samuel, he called on the Lord to give the people a show of heavenly fireworks to remind them who was really in charge! When the Lord answered Samuel’s and sent the thunder and the rain, the people realized he was speaking truth. The healthy “fear” or reverence for God as well as Samuel was renewed at least for the moment. They even asked Samuel to tell the Lord that they had repented of their evil request for a king.
This reminds me of how often I wish some human would tell me what direction I should take, give me a list of rules and regulations to live by, rather than to take the responsibility to develop a close relationship with the Lord so He can direct me and truly be the King of my life.
Lord, let me draw close to You, so I can hear Your voice and I can follow Your daily directions for my life. I want to see Your thunder and lightening and have only You be the rain on my life! Amen.
